Hungry Horse

Surrounded by some of Western Montana's most spectacular mountains, and only a few minutes from Glacier National Park, is the small community of Hungry Horse.

Hungry Horse sits on the edge of Hungry Horse Lake, just below its other namesake—Hungry Horse Dam. Located on the South Fork of the Flathead River, Hungry Horse Dam is Montana's highest (sitting at 564 feet) and helps control flooding on the Flathead and Columbia rivers. During the summer months, visitors can take guided tours of the dam and learn about its history and present day function.

The Hungry Horse area also offers access to nearby hiking, fishing and camping.

Insider Tip

Slow the car down and pull over at one of the local huckleberry stands, located along Highway 2 as it makes its way through Hungry Horse, and pick up delightful huckleberry-themed creations.
