Golden Eagle

Making its home in Montana year-round, the golden eagle can range in length from 33 to 38 inches, with a wingspan of 6.5 – 7.5 feet. A very large raptor with mostly brown coloring and a horn-colored bill, the golden eagle nests on cliffs and in large trees, hunting in prairies and open woodlands.

Noted for their strong eyesight, golden eagles can often spot their prey from long distances. They largely feed on jackrabbits, ground squirrels and carrion and will occasionally feed on deer, waterfowl, grouse and weasels. For more information, visit the Montana Field Guide.
