Ice Skating:
Gliding Across Nature's Handiwork

In our Montana winter wonderland, you'll find plenty of places to ice skate, including indoor rinks, outdoor rinks and across some of nature's handiwork: ponds, lakes and streams.

Tips for a Great Skate

Before you lace up those skates and do your best Michelle Kwan or Scott Davis (a local Montana boy), follow these tips to make your skating experience successful.

If you're a beginner, learn to stop and fall safely before you venture onto the ice. Make sure your skates fit comfortable (not too tight, not too loose) and support your ankles. Don't be dull-have a professional sharpen your skate blades. If you're skating at a maintained rink, obey all the rules for your own safety.

When skating on lakes, ponds and streams, be extra careful. Remember that the ice isn't going to be glassy smooth. Watch for cracks, holes, debris or colored ice that may indicate dangerous conditions.
